A work of art, a 3D portrait of “Chaos” that may well become the world’s largest paper sculpture, is being created inside an Indianapolis high school.

Indianapolis artist Conrad Cortellini, a 1961 Scecina graduate and current artist-in-residence at Scecina Memorial High School, began the Feedback Fractal Project (Project) as a grand experiment based on new ideas, new imagery, and new approaches in art making. The Project has set out to produce a work of art titled “Splendor of the Firmament.”

The first public showing of two completed parts of “Splendor of the Firmament” will be Wednesday, June 12, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Scecina.

The finished work will measure 32 feet wide and 24 feet high and comprises 307,200 individual elements. It is subdivided into 12 sections, called “Quadros,” each 8 feet by 8 feet.

The first Quadro was made in studio space provided by DeveloperTown (DT), a high-tech Indianapolis startup company. Artisans from among DT employees and others from the broader community created the 25,200 individual elements by hand over a period of two years that were assembled into Quadro One, “the DeveloperTown Quadro.”

Subsequently, the Project was moved to the first artist-in-residence studio at Scecina, where student artisans and others assembled Quadro Two, “the Scecina Quadro.”

The reception is being held to mark the joining of two Quadros.
