“I was very humbled by this news. There are so many people that deserve this award more than me that it is hard to accept. The teachers, staff and administrators that devote their life to Catholic schools are the ones that deserve these types of awards.”
This is Kevin Johnson ‘77: kind and caring, humble, modest, and puts others before himself.
“Kevin is an incredible Scecina alumnus and Board member. He cares. He’s insightful and generous. He finds the good in people and ideas. I enjoy seeking Kevin’s advice and counsel because he is trustworthy, open-minded, and truly believes in the mission of the school,” says President Joe Therber. “Through the many years we have known each other, his impact on Scecina has been significant. My respect for Kevin has only grown over time, and he has a great sense of humor! I envision Kevin when I think of people who get a lump in their throat when they talk about Scecina.”
Kevin will receive the Career Achievement Award at the annual archdiocesan Celebrating Catholic School Values event on February 9, 2017. Not only is he a loyal Crusader, but he also is a supporter of many other Catholic causes. He attended Little Flower Catholic School, is a Holy Spirit parishioner and serves on the Scecina Board of Directors and Archdiocesan Catholic Schools Commission. His favorite ministry is Holy Spirit’s SPRED program. SPRED is program that provides religious education and social activities to developmentally challenged adults and children.
“The joy of being around, and sharing faith, with those with special needs is beyond words,” he says. “Our world would be a much better place if everyone looked at life like our special needs friends do, so loving and non-judgmental!”
Kevin began his Catholic formation at Little Flower grade school. Little did he know then that his childhood and Scecina classmate would become his future wife! Kevin and Lori (Watts) Johnson ‘77 have been married for 35 years and have two children, Anne and Tom.
“Little Flower was both my and my wife’s school. Both our families were members of the parish and we both feel like Little Flower was an important part of our faith development,” Kevin says.
Kevin also recalls important role models, like John Henninger, who impacted his faith.
“The examples of living your life the right way were demonstrated to me every day by the awesome people who worked at Scecina and volunteered their time at Scecina,” he says.
Kevin also ranked senior retreat highly on his list of memorable experiences. And every Crusader feels the strong connection with senior retreat – which, for some, is the first important spiritual step in his or her adult life.
Kevin is CEO of Kocolene Development Corporation, an investment holding company that supports warehouse and logistics businesses and the retail industry. Kevin is proud to say the company is 100% employee-owned and was named the 2016 Indiana ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) Company of the Year.
Kevin is a proud Scecina alumnus. He believes that Scecina is the beacon of hope for the Eastside and alumni involvement is so important in continuing to be that light for the Eastside.
“I am so proud of the entire Scecina community and the impact it has had and will continue to have on the Eastside of Indianapolis,” he says. “I truly believe Scecina changes lives every day!”
